USA Confirms Sustainable Ocean Plan

A new National Strategy for A Sustainable Ocean Economy published by the Biden-Harris Administration

Jun 3, 2024

Washington DC, USA – 3 June 2024

The White House has released three new strategies to advance sustainable ocean management, including a National Strategy for A Sustainable Ocean Economy.  This will serve as the USA’s Plan Océano Sostenible, a key milestone in fulfilling its commitment as an Ocean Panel member country to sustainably manage 100% of the ocean under national jurisdiction.

The USA’s National Strategy for A Sustainable Ocean Economy will guide ocean policies to support three main goals:

  • Conserve, protect, restore, and maintain healthy ocean and coastal ecosystems;
  • Support resilient people and communities;
  • Advance sustainable and just economic development.

Arati Prabhakar, President Biden’s chief advisor on science and technology and Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) said, “These reports point the way to work with this precious natural resource to address inequities and injustice, and to meet the challenges of the climate crisis and biodiversity loss.”

The White House highlighted that the Strategy presents a whole-of-government vision for the policies and actions necessary to support resilient and prosperous ecosystems, people and communities.

The National Strategy for A Sustainable Ocean Economy was released alongside two other new ocean policies, the National Ocean Biodiversity Strategy y el National Aquatic eDNA Strategy with the White House emphasising that these three new strategies complement actions previously taken to achieve a healthy ocean that supports people and the economy.
