Hosted by Namibia’s Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Hon. Derek Klazen, the gathering brought together Sherpas representing 19 member nations—countries that collectively oversee 45% of the world’s Exclusive Economic Zones.
Key outcomes included preparations for the 2025 UN Ocean Conference in Nice, France, where the Panel plans to demonstrate strong leadership on global ocean issues. Members also advanced discussions on the 100% Alliance campaign, which urges all coastal and ocean states to commit to fully sustainable ocean management.
Namibia showcased its leadership in fisheries sustainability, with Executive Director Annely Haiphene presenting on efforts to maximize seafood use and reduce waste through the Namibian Ocean Cluster. Experts also addressed the rising global threat of Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, highlighting collaborative actions through the IUU Action Alliance.
The meeting emphasized the importance of tracking member progress toward the Panel’s core goal: 100% sustainable management of national ocean areas. As the world prepares for pivotal decisions at next year’s UNOC, the Ocean Panel reaffirmed its commitment to actionable leadership in protecting the world’s oceans.
