Developed through engagement with First Nations peoples, ocean communities, researchers, conservationists, governments and marine industries, the SOP recognises the interconnected nature of Australia’s ocean, economy and communities. It sets out eight priority areas for action: climate action; protecting, restoring and building marine resilience; growing ocean industries; working with First Nations peoples; strengthening collaboration; ensuring equity and inclusion; building knowledge; and mobilising finance.
The SOP will also support Australia’s growing ocean economy, which generates AUS $229 billion each year in economic output and supports more than 700,000 jobs. Early implementation measures will include the establishment of a National Ocean Steering Committee and National Ocean Advisory Group, intended to strengthen coordination and collaboration, support progress across their SOP’s priority areas and ensure different perspectives are heard on important ocean issues.
Australia is also a co-lead of the 100% Alliance for Sustainable Ocean Management, alongside Chile. Launched in 2024, the Alliance calls on all ocean and coastal states to adopt a 100% approach to sustainable ocean management and develop a SOP to guide it.
