The SOP establishes an overarching framework to guide the sustainable management and long-term stewardship of Ghana’s marine and coastal environments and is structured around six strategic pillars: ocean wealth, ocean health, ocean knowledge, ocean equity, ocean finance and maritime security. The SOP articulates a clear national vision that Ghana’s dedication to safeguarding marine ecosystems while enabling the sustainable use of ocean resources for the benefit of present and future generations.
Ghana is one of the 14 founding members of the Ocean Panel, and its SOP is closely aligned with the Transformations Agenda, underscoring the country’s commitment to contributing to global efforts aimed at achieving 100% sustainable ocean management. By publishing an SOP, Ghana demonstrates leadership within the international community and offers an example for other coastal and island states seeking to balance environmental protection with economic opportunity.

Ghana now transitions to the implementation phase, during which the government will work with domestic stakeholders and international partners to operationalise its strategic priorities.
