Across the Conference&#8217;s six action areas, Ocean Panel members announced major commitments from expanding marine protected areas and strengthening sustainable fisheries management, to investing in ocean science and building resilience in coastal communities.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Below are several high-impact\u00a0Ocean Panel\u00a0commitments announced during the Conference expected to deliver significant benefits:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Strengthening Ocean Science in the Southern Ocean<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">La\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Government of Australia<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0announced an\u00a0additional\u00a0$65.9 million\u00a0over four years to support Antarctic and Southern Ocean marine science. The investment will strengthen scientific understanding of one of the world&#8217;s most important and climate-sensitive marine regions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Expanding Marine Protected Areas<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">La\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Brazilian Ministry of Environment<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and Climate Change and the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) committed to increasing Brazil\u2019s Marine Protected Area coverage by approximately\u00a0240,000 square\u00a0kilometres\u00a0over the next five years, advancing national conservation\u00a0ambitions\u00a0and supporting marine biodiversity.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">La\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Government of Portugal<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0announced the creation of the D. Carlos Marine Reserve, a new protected area covering\u00a0173,000 square\u00a0kilometres. The designation will increase the proportion of Portugal\u2019s marine area under protection from 19 percent to 25 percent.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Meanwhile, the\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Government of Indonesia<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0committed to evaluating the effectiveness of its 19.1 million hectares of marine protected areas by 2026, including assessments of both biophysical and socio-economic outcomes. The initiative will also strengthen capacity among assessors and local communities involved in marine conservation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Investing in Resilient Coastal Infrastructure<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">La\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Government of Canada<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0committed\u00a0$682.7 million\u00a0over five years through the Small Craft Harbours Program. The investment will repair,\u00a0modernise, and strengthen the climate resilience of small craft\u00a0harbour\u00a0infrastructure, supporting coastal economies and fishing communities across the country.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Advancing Sustainable Fisheries<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">La\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Government of Kenya<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0committed to installing electronic monitoring systems on all industrial and semi-industrial fishing vessels\u00a0operating\u00a0in its waters and equipping small-scale fishing vessels with Class-B Automatic Identification Systems (AIS). Backed by\u00a0$200 million, the commitment aims to strengthen\u00a0fisheries\u00a0governance, transparency, and monitoring.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">La\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Government of Norway<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0announced an\u00a0additional\u00a0$4.3 million\u00a0to strengthen fisheries management capacity in 32 partner countries through the FAO\u2013Norway EAF-Nansen\u00a0Programme, supporting sustainable fisheries and science-based management worldwide.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Following a\u00a0successul\u00a0Conference in\u00a0Kenya,\u00a0Canada will host the 12th OOC in Halifax, Nova Scotia in Spring 2027. As host, Canada plans to highlight Indigenous and community leadership in ocean protection and the sustainable blue economy. No OOC is planned for 2028, to avoid coinciding with the fourth UN Ocean Conference which will be co-hosted by the Republic of Korea and Chile that year. In 2029, Jamaica will the first OOC to be held in the Caribbean with plans to hold the conference in Montego Bay.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These\u00a0successive\u00a0Our Ocean Conference hosts\u00a0reflect\u00a0the leadership of\u00a0the\u00a0Ocean Panel\u2019s\u00a0membership\u00a0in\u00a0convening\u00a0global action, fostering\u00a0accountability\u00a0and accelerating implementation of solutions that\u00a0benefit\u00a0both people and the ocean.\u00a0<\/span><span
