Hon. Mari Elka Pangestu, Ph.D.
University of Indonesia
Dr. Pangestu brings world-class expertise in development and trade economics, and hands-on experience with policy development processes in a developing country context. She is a Professor of International Economics at the University of Indonesia and currently serving as the World Bank Managing Director of Development Policy and Partnerships.
She sat on the Board of Trustees for the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (Jakarta), one of the country’s premier policy think tanks, and on the Board of Trustees for the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). From 2011-2014, she was Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy for the Republic of Indonesia.
Under her leadership, the Ministry empowered local communities to manage their own marine resources for sustainable development, expanded the marine tourism industry, and retrained fishermen away from using dynamite to catch fish and instead rehabilitate marine areas to produce more fish catch and support dive tourism.
She also initiated sustainable management certification systems for marine tourism and new waste management and clean-up programmes. From 2004-2011, Dr. Pangestu was Minister of Trade for the Republic of Indonesia. While Minister, she successfully introduced efforts to increase traceability, standards, and quality for fisheries, and introduced programmes to avoid trade in illegally sourced fish.
