As Leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Shinzō Abe was elected Prime Minister of Japan in 2012, having previously held that position from 2006 to 2007. He was re-elected in 2014, and again in 2017.

Abe is the third-longest serving Prime Minister in post-war Japan. He became Japan's youngest post-war Prime Minister on his election in 2006 aged 52, is the first to have been born after World War II, and was the first former Prime Minister to return to the office since Shigeru Yoshida in 1948. He won a seat in the National Diet (Kokkai) in 1993, and has held a series of government posts.

Abe was born in Tokyo, and graduated from the Department of Political Science, the Faculty of Law, Seikei University. He began his career at Kobe Steel, Ltd, before becoming active in the LDP and working as Executive Assistant to the Minister for Foreign Affairs.
